Not quite the replacement for Burnes that the O's fans were hoping for.
They’ll still win 90 games. Have a decent rotation.

According to the below, the Blue Jays have offered Santander 4/$82 million.

Rough offseason for the Birds.

The BLOS didn’t need him back. They have replacements.

I like Morton a lot. It's a step down from Burnes, of course, but the key for them is the development of Grayson Rodriguez, a good adjustment to MLB from Sugano, Eflin keeping up his performance, and Kremer being a solid #5. It's still a good rotation, potentially very good, but it lacks the top end ace for the playoffs and head to heads with Cole, Crochet, etc...

Dodgers sending Gavin Lux to the Reds for a Competitive Balance Round A pick (around No. 37) and outfield prospect Mike Sirota.

Apparently not...

Within this story on Gavin Lux: it appears the plan still is for the Dodgers to have Mookie Betts at shortstop even after signing Hyeseong Kim and trading the incumbent 2B in Lux:

Wow I remember when Gavin Lux was the prospect every fan of a rebuilding team wanted to get in exchange for sending their major league superstar to LA. Now he goes to the Reds for a song.

Apparently it's the Prince Fielder deal they're aiming for. Problem is:

1. Prince Fielder was two years younger when entering FA
2. Prince Fielder was a significantly better hitter
3. Prince Fielder's contract was one of the worst of all time

I suppose the one thing in Alonso's favor with this comp is inflation, but it's really hard to see anyone signing him for that much money through his age 39 season.

The Nats really should have signed Fielder. :couch:

Well at least another fourth place finish for the Nats next year isn't out of the question:

Signed for only $5.5 million but apparently many teams offered more. He just wanted to go back home for his last season. Too bad; was a guy I thought we could get at a reasonable price.

Too late to nag now. You should’ve voted for Vermin Supreme when you had the chance.

You would not believe the ess Posey and the owners are getting around here for not being more aggressive.  Never mind NY, Boston, Chicago, or Philly, LA, Detroit, or any other market with more people than Harm City, Mini Me and Rizzo would survive 10 minutes here before being booted out of town with their nonsense.

It's the 49ers fault for having a bad season.

I sometimes wonder whether the Nats could play for some Virginia-born guys. I'm sure VaRK would have loved to have been Verlander's driver up from scenic Goochland (near the fashionable west end of Henrico County) to DC.

They're all or nothing.  8 years with Kyle, 4 seasons of making at least the NFC Championship, 4 with a losing record.

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/checking-in-on-free-agent-contract-predictions/

A review of how FA contracts come in vs predictions. Soto deal tends to throw off all the averages, leading to the predictions being much better if you do not include Soto. Signed pitchers are getting paid better than predicted, while middle relievers are coming in closer to predictions. With about half of the top 50 still to sign, the predictions may look better if some of the FAs have to mark down their price.

Quote
If you exclude Soto, another pattern emerges: Both sets of predictions fared quite well on average annual values given to marquee free agents, but missed the length of these deals, often considerably. On the other hand, both sets of predictions were quite good at mid-tier free agents, the types who populate the back end of the top 50. This makes sense to me – we have far more data points on guys like these. What do aging first basemen get? We all basically know. Tandem catchers? Platoon DHs? Non-closer relievers? Ditto. We know how the game values these players, and therefore, their contracts are easier to estimate. Max Fried’s deal has far fewer comps, just by the nature of how few players are as good as him when they reach free agency.
